Beatriz Pizano welcomes you to the 2018 RUTAS International Multi-Arts Festival
September 15, 2018
RUTAS 2018! How has this multi-arts festival grown since its humble beginnings? Our goal continues to be to connect the Americas through the Arts. But how we do it, and what that means, has certainly evolved over the last six years. I still remember curating the first RUTAS in 2012. Most of the presenting artists were friends, or friends of a friend. It was like inviting all the coolest people to a dinner for eight. As we realized that the festival was here to stay, we were challenged to do exactly what the festival intended: to become acquainted with the polyphony of voices, perspectives and artistic practices across this continent– and to make this, our Toronto, the meeting place for conversations about the many worlds we inhabit, and to create a safe space where we have the possibility to open our hearts, minds and collective imagination.
This year our programming at RUTAS creates a dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary. From rites of passage and ceremony, to celebration, these performances dig deeply into the roots of performance itself, inviting us to enter into a relationship and to relate to one other, to the collective, and to the land we stand upon.
RUTAS is a small festival with a gigantic heart. It brings to Toronto unique pieces that are large in scope because of their artistic innovation, the themes they invoke, and the commitment of each presenting artist to be bold, risky, experimental, daring, and not afraid to shake our inner core.
