Meet the Stones Ensemble: Nickeshia Garrick
May 17, 2018
Over the next few weeks, we’ll be profiling some of the amazing women of Stones. We asked Nickeshia Garrick to talk a bit about her collaboration on the project:
1. Why did you want to collaborate on Stones?
The project was first explained to me by one of the original cast members who suggested I audition for the piece. Because of its subject matter, I felt compelled to be part of such an important message.
2. What have you learned from working with this group of creators?
I’ve learned that despite our differences, our dedication to representing and speaking for these women who have lost their lives based on just being women, is strong and united.
3. How does this piece resonate with you personally?
I’m a queer woman of colour from immigrant parents and I would NOT have the platform to express myself as openly if I wasn’t born in Canada, so this piece resonates with me because I can openly speak for these women who have been brutally murdered, and I can share their stories so that their deaths weren’t in vain.
4. What do you hope audiences will take away from Stones?
I hope audiences will take away respect for these brave women.
