For Sale
June 12, 2003 – June 22, 2003
The Theatre Centre, Toronto
For Sale deals with the armed struggle in Colombia, a country that needs more of the world’s attention. “FOR SALE” hopes to create an both an appreciation of its culture, and to bring homage to all those individuals, especially women, in Colombia and the international community, who risk their lives in the name of peace.
The play is a realistic portrayal of events in an imagistic space. The story follows a woman through a near-death experience in which she reviews her personal life, some episodes from the armed conflict in Colombia, and several figures from that country’s history. The theatrical environment will be occasionally broken by screens and light – at times both beautiful and threatening, as a mirror to the daily lives of those caught up in Colombia’s 50 years of insurgency and violence. As with the narrative, and with existence under constant threat of kidnapping or brutality, we see only parts of things illuminated at any one time, even though the pieces are all there.
“Beautifully conceived and acted.”
